How do you install valve jackets?
We can talk you through the installation process as it's very simple.
Step 1 - Take the valve cover, wrap it around the valve and pull the two ends together so they meet.
Step 2 - Take the velcro flaps from each opposing end and press them onto each other so they fasten together.
Step 3 - Finally take the cords that run along the length of the jacket from each opposing end, and pull them as tight as you can to close any gaps so they are snug around the valve and pipe both.
Step 4 - Tie the cords into a knot the same way you would tie your shoelaces.
And that's it! They really are very simple devices, and these insulation jackets are designed to be easily removable for access to the valve for maintenance purposes for example.

What is valve jacket insulation?
Valve insulation jackets are custom-made as removable insulation for valves or flanges to protect them from heat loss, damage and extreme temperatures. They are custom-made to fit all types of valves and flanges and provide thermal insulation and soundproofing for HVAC systems.
They are most commonly used in commercial and industrial buildings although there's no reason why they cannot be utilised in domestic properties too.
The outer cover of the jackets is made using a silicone-coated glass fibre cloth, which is typically standard grey or standard black in colour.
Usually, an infill of 50mm thick mineral wool insulation is placed inside the fibreglass cloth and carefully sewn to give a neat finish to these valve jackets, although different types (like lamella) and thicknesses (25 to 100mm) can be inserted too.
They have Velcro straps and pull cords to ensure easy removal and proper fitting around the valves. The cords are used to draw the jacket close to the pipe or pipe insulation that they straddle, closing any gaps.
What are pipe valve insulation jackets otherwise known as?
Over the years these jackets have gone by many names, so just to clear any confusion here is a list of aliases jackets go by -
- Valve insulation bags
- Valve insulation blankets
- Heating jacket for pipes
- Valve Muffs
- Lagging Jackets
- Valve insulation wraps
Importance of Insulated Valve Jackets
Valve insulation jackets are primarily designed to insulate valves from the ambient temperature in which they are situated, whether that be in a plant room for example or on external pipework.
They provide an extra layer of insulation between the actual valve and its surrounding environment which helps keep the liquid that runs through them at the set temperature to which it has been intentionally conditioned to.
The right jacket can also help reduce noise levels associated with the normal operation of H&V systems, meaning there is less noise to travel through the structure of the building, making for a more pleasant working environment.
Furthermore, using insulated valve jackets can help extend the life of your valves since they protect them from potential damage caused by extreme temperature fluctuations or hazardous conditions such as chemicals or corrosive materials.
And lastly, insulated valve jackets can help reduce energy costs by maintaining a steady temperature around your valves which increases their efficiency.
What are valve jackets manufactured from?
Valve jackets are made of two main components:
Fibreglass cloth:
The glass cloth forms the outer part of these insulation jackets. They are usually coated with silicone, PVC or other high-performing material.
In the case of steam jackets, we need to use a high-temperature coating which can resist the jacket being in contact with pipes that are running constantly at 100 degrees Celsius.
The exterior cover ensures protection from dust, damage and other external factors.
Mineral wool:
The external fibreglass cloth is sewn around mineral wool insulation, which itself can be either rock wool or glass wool. Each valve jacket contains about 50mm of mineral wool insulation.
The low K-value of this mineral wool insulation ensures protection from heat loss or gain.
Velcro and Pull Cords:
Valve covers are also provided with draw cords and complete with velcro straps that secure the 2 opposite ends of the jacket together. The draw cords are pulled tight to 'draw' the jacket onto the pipe or pipe insulation, closing any gaps where heat or coolth could escape.
How to pick the right size of valve jacket insulation?
The right size or the right fit will depend on a couple of factors:
The valve or flange you want to insulate:
Each valve will be dimensionally different. You cannot use a standard valve jacket on a butterfly valve or vice versa for example.
The size of the pipe:
The valves are placed on pipework to regulate, control or monitor the liquid flow within. So, the size of the pipe determines the size of your valve insulation jacket. For eg: if you have a 15mm pipe, the valve cover you need will also be 15mm in size.
The thickness of the pipe lagging
The thickness of the pipe insulation will help us determine the space we need to allow in the valve jackets to ensure a perfect fit.
We usually ask you for this information, along with the valve model number, if available, while processing your valve jacket order online.
Chilled Water Pipe Valves
When it comes to chilled water valves, you need to, first of all, insulate and vapour seal the valve itself with something like a standard ductwrap. When fully sealed with aluminium foil tape, ductwrap insulation will prevent the valve from 'sweating', that is, prevent condensation from forming on the valve.
This in turn prevents water from dripping on the floor or seeping into the valve cover itself, negating its effectiveness as thermal insulation.
What should you look for in Insulated valve Jackets?
Valves come in a variety of shapes and sizes, each with its unique geometry. As a result, one size or style of jacket will not fit all valves.
Not only are there different types of valves but each valve manufacturer designs them differently, meaning that there is a multitude of different varieties of valves that needs to be taken into account.
Also, valve jackets are available in different finishes which you need to consider as we explain below.
Internal or External
We offer valve insulation covers that are fit for both external and internal applications. You need to specify whether the jackets are required for valves that are situated outside because they need extra protection from the elements.
External valve jackets have double skin of silicone to prevent moisture ingress which would significantly reduce the effectiveness of the thermal insulation that the insulated pipe jacket can offer.
Colour and Finish
You can also choose from different colours to have your pipe insulation jackets manufactured in. At Buy Insulation Online we generally supply valve covers in grey, black, white and also reflective silver colours. Different colours may be different prices. Please ask our sales team if you would like quotes for white or silver.
Why use thermal insulation jackets?
Valve Jackets have many benefits, some of which are listed below:
1. They save energy costs
The main advantage of employing valve jackets for valves is energy savings. These valve covers are fitted into place using pull cords and straps, which ensures airtight insulation, thus preventing heat from escaping. Less heat loss around the valves equals more energy savings.
2. They are superior to standard insulation:
It is a tedious task to remove and reinstall hard insulation from the valves every time you inspect them. The process can also destroy the insulation itself, rendering it useless and inappropriate for reuse.
This makes valve covers cost-effective when compared to the labour and materials of manually insulating the valve.
Your valves will remain exposed and uninsulated during this time resulting in a substantial rise in energy costs.
These expenses can be avoided by insulating valves using removable and flexible valve covers.
3. They extend the lifespan of Valves
Valve jacket insulation protects valves from damage. When used outside a building, they protect valves against extreme temperatures, sunlight, etc. They help improve the service life of the valves which otherwise be left uncovered.
Thermal insulation jackets protect valves from corrosion, moisture, rusting, mould, and other concerns that can affect them.
Insulated valve covers, in short, extend the life of valves by shielding them from damage.
4. Problem-free maintenance:
Periodic inspection and maintenance of valves are required to discover and rectify problems with function, performance, and loss of energy if any. Valve maintenance also aids in the prevention of corrosion, leaks and accidents.
Using a removable jacket instead of fixed insulation and cladding, the process of inspection becomes easy. Just loosen the cords and remove the Velcro straps. They can be just as easily re-applied.
If you was to insulate the valves with standard, rigid insulation and cladding, to access the valve you would need to destroy the insulation as it would be almost impossible to save it and reuse it.
Being easy to fit and remove, jackets have a clear advantage over standard insulation in this regard. Valve jackets are easy to remove and reinstall.
This flexible feature of valve jacket insulation is extremely useful during maintenance. They can reduce the maintenance time by half. The best part is that they do not harm the valve in any way and you do not have to be extra cautious while removing or reinstalling them.
5. Protect Personnel from Burns and Accidents
Since valve covers completely cover the hot surface of the valve, they eliminate the chances of personnel accidentally coming in contact with the hot valve surface, reducing accidents and burns.
Also, since they reduce condensation and sweating, they reduce the possibility of tiny water pools forming on the floor beneath the valves, thereby reducing slips or accidents.
Jackets also efficiently conceal sharp edges of application equipment, making the workplace safer.
6. Safer Workplace
It might be exhausting to work with heated pipes and valves. The nearby areas will likely be hot as well.
These conditions not only cause discomfort to your team but also result in dehydration. It could further lead to accidents or errors.
You can reduce the heat from equipment, valves, and pipes by using thermal insulation covers in these places. The result will be a cooler and safer working environment.
7. Prevent Condensation
When condensation occurs around pipes or valves, the water drips down and creates puddles in your workplace. These tiny water puddles often go unnoticed, leading to slips and injuries.
Flexible insulation covers will reduce condensation substantially, resulting in a safer working environment.
8. Improve Aesthetics of the workplace
Valve jackets look the part and really complement the insulation when fitted correctly and the right colour is chosen. We suggest using the following combinations for the best finish
- Grey or silver internally with standard foil insulation
- White with Isogenopak Cladding
- Black with PIB rubber weatherproofing finish
- Grey or silver with aluminium cladding finish
All in all, they improve the aesthetics of your plant room or workplace and contribute to a much nicer work environment.
